Oceanographic Verification Database

++

For independent verification of inversion results obtained in Moving Ship and Matched Field tomographic experiments we assembled a detailed oceanographic database. It includes the data of 157 CTD profiles carried out during 39 days of at field work. The measurements were performed with two commercial CTD probes ``Mark-III'': 151 casts out of 157 were done using the staff probe of ASV ``Mark-III'' Serial Number 01-1199, and the remaining 6 using the probe S/N 2332-03 of the Atlantic branch of P. P. Shirshov Oceanology Institute. The locations and times of all the casts performed are listed in Tabs. 2.9 - 2.14. Their distribution with the profiling depth is presented in the table below:

In addition, the database includes the results of 3 XBT sections conducted along the H-W3 path in the framework of the major THETIS-2 experiments. They were carried out within the period of our expedition on June 19, July 4 and July 18, 1994. Each section consists of 24 individual XBT casts equally spaced from France to Algerie. The profile depth was usually about 750 m. It is important that the end points of the XBT sections are closer to the coast than in our survey. Thus, they provide unique information on the sound speed field in the immediate vicinity of 2 sources.

To evaluate the accuracy and detail level of this hydrographic information we compared the experimental acoustic records with theoretical predictions build using the collected database. The analysis presented in the body of the report (Sects. 2.1.5.2, 2.1.6.2, and 2.2.4) proves that the acoustical and hydrological data are in good argeement. The CTD verification programme provided detailed description of the medium, which is adequate for initiating the tomographic inversion and / or for verification of its results.

The majority of stations were performed with the regular Mark-III probe available at ASV. The stations marked by asterisks - with CTD probe from the Kaliningrad branch of P. P. Shirshov Oceanology Institute
