Objectives of the Project

To create an acoustic database for an adequate comparison of three different approaches to the monitoring of the ocean structure and variability of basin scales.

In order to achieve this major goal, the following individual achievements are:

The project was carried out by co-operative effort of four research groups:

It should be emphasized, that the first draft of the Work Programme of the present project as submitted to INTAS in 1993 provided for 2-year research which included both field experiments on 3 different approaches to the Ocean Acoustic Tomography and data inversion and comparison of the approaches. The project finally supported by INTAS included only the first part and results of this investigation are reported below. During our work we established fruitful cooperative links between Russian and European partners and the study will be continued to fulfill complete inversion of the sound speed field in all covered areas, to compare the possibilities of different methods and to assimilate the data obtained via all 3 approaches. We hope that the second year of the project which originally was not approved will really take place in support of the planned work.
